Historic Preservation

Historic Preservation is a sustainable process in bringing back the original splendor of an historic property and all it incorporates. The words "preservation" and "restoration" go hand-in-hand in the entire process of historic preservation.

According to t
he most current definitions of the Secretary of Interior's Standards and Guidelines: "Preservation is the act or process of applying measures necessary to sustain the existing form, integrity, and materials of an historic property."   And "Restoration" is defined as the act or process of accurately depicting the form, features, and character of a property as it appeared at a particular period of time by means of the removal of features from other periods  in its history and reconstruction of missing features from the restoration period."  In his talk on "Sustainable Stewardship," Richard Moe, the then President of National Trust for Historic Preservation, beautifully articulated that: "Because it naturally involves the conservation of energy and natural resources, historic preservation is the greenest of the building arts" (1998, Berkeley).
