Interior Restoration

Old Trondhjem Norwegian Lutheran Church is an architectural mix of Greek Revival and Gothic Revival styles, with elements of the Norwegian stave church.  The original church (cruciform plan) was built in 1878.  All but the chancel was taken down in 1899 to allow a larger building to be erected in its place.  The original chancel was incorporated in the new building.

The interior of the church was decorated with hand painted and stenciled tempera on plaster decorative motifs.  All the original murals were discovered under multiple layers of paint, wallpaper, and embossed tin coverings.

After the restoration of the plastered walls, the murals were restored or replicated in the large areas where the original paint layer was missing.

Restoration consisted of:

  • Removing multiple layers of paint and wallpaper
  • Cleaning
  • Filling cracks, holes and all missing areas of plaster support and paint
  • Consolidation of paint layers
  • Inpainting
  • Varnishing with a UV protective and reversible synthetic varnish
The restoration project was completed in 2002.
