Figurative Murals Restoration

Saint George Greek Orthodox Church was built in 1967 in a style that replicates the Greek churches from the Aegean Islands. The hemispheric dome above the central space of the church and the apse are decorated with figurative murals – oil on canvas paintings attached to the plaster support. The background of the paintings was gilded.

Due to a defective roof, the murals, as well as the plaster support, were damaged by infiltrating water. The murals were restored and their background gilded with 24K gold leaf.

Restoration consisted of:

  • Cleaning
  • Mending and reattaching the delaminated canvas to the plaster support
  • Filling cracks, holes and missing areas of paint
  • Inpainting using reversible conservation materials
  • Varnishing using a reversible, non-yellowing, UV protective synthetic varnish

The restoration project was completed in 1998
